Ever felt like life’s treadmill is set just a tad too fast? Like you’re juggling a dozen too many balls, and they’re all on fire? That’s burnout for you, we’ve all been there. Good news- Emily and Amelia Nagoski wrote a whole book on it, Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle. It’s packed with gems on how to not just survive, but actually break out of the stress and burnout cycle. Too busy for a full read? We’ve got the essential bits right here. Grab your favourite snack, take a deep breath, and let’s dive into the quick guide to dodging the burnout bullet.
The stress cycle: Our bodies are designed to respond to short-term threats. However, many of the stresses in modern life are long-term, so we get trapped in an ongoing stress response.
Completing the stress cycle: To counteract the effects of prolonged stress, we need to complete the cycle, signaling to our bodies that the threat has passed.
Physical activity: This is the most efficient way to complete the stress cycle. Activities like walking, running, and dancing help.
Breathing: Deep and slow breathing can tell your body that you’re safe.
Positive social interaction: Brief, friendly interactions, even with strangers, can help reduce the feeling of threat.
Laughter: Genuine laughter can help release tension.
Hugs: A 20-second hug from someone you trust can induce feelings of safety.
Crying: Tears can help in processing emotions.
Creative expression: Drawing, writing, singing, or other forms of expression can be therapeutic.
Definition: Burnout is the feeling of being overwhelmed and exhausted by everything you have to do while still worrying that you’re not doing enough.
Three components of burnout:
– Emotional exhaustion: Feeling drained and used up.
– Decreased sense of accomplishment: Feeling incompetent and unproductive.
– Depersonalization: Feeling disconnected from your job and the people around you.
Human Giver Syndrome: A societal expectation, especially for women, that they should always be giving of themselves. This can cause women to prioritize everyone else’s needs above their own.
The Bikini Industrial Complex: Societal pressures around women’s bodies and appearances, which can be a major source of stress.
Rest and Human Giver Syndrome: The pressure to be constantly productive and available can prevent women from getting the rest they need.
The “Madonna-Whore Dichotomy”: This is the societal trap where women are categorized as either pure (and thus asexual) or sexual (and thus impure).
Active rest: Activities like reading or crafting can be rejuvenating.
Passive rest: Sleep and downtime are essential for recovery.
Connection: Emphasizes the importance of connections and relationships in women’s lives. Disconnection can be a significant source of pain and burnout.
Power of empathy: Genuine empathy can lead to mutual empowerment and prevent burnout.
Different from exercise: The focus is on movement that feels good and is pleasurable rather than a duty or a means to an end.
The role in burnout prevention: Regularly engaging in joyful movement can help in completing the stress cycle.
Find your “why”: Understanding the deeper purpose behind what you do can act as a buffer against burnout.
Redefining success: It’s essential to set boundaries and recognize that you don’t have to meet every societal expectation.
Know when to seek help: If burnout becomes severe, it’s important to consult with professionals.
In essence, Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle provides a comprehensive approach to understanding, managing, and preventing burnout. It’s particularly tailored to the experiences of women but honestly applicable to everyone. Navigating burnout isn’t easy, but with the right tools and insights, it’s manageable. Prioritize self-awareness, make intentional choices, and remember that seeking balance is an ongoing process.
